How long will a 1. TDI engine last?
Almost impossible to say but a well serviced engine should last well past 100 k miles and many more. The clutch/dmf, turbo, egr system etc are the biggest concern really on a diesel engine and can start to get expensive should problems occur. If it’s a DSG the box will cause issues before the engine will. A well-maintained diesel truck commonly lasts 300,000 to 500,000 miles, and many run beyond that when service intervals, injectors, and the cooling system are kept in check. Some commercial diesel engines reach higher numbers, but light-duty pickups typically fall in the 300k to 500k range under normal use.
Is Polo TSI or TDI better?
While both engines are powerful, once on the move, it’s the better refinement of the TSI engine that you tend to gravitate towards. The TDI engine is quite raw and has lots of grunt, and though it does rev cleanly to and past it’s redline, it is accompanied with a lot of vibration and cabin noise. It’s also not really worth upgrading to the 2. Nm of torque, the 1. TDI engine actually has very decent on-road performance and the upshot is low emissions and the potential for being able to average 60mpg if you treat it gently. The 1. L engine strikes a good balance for everyday driving. It delivers enough power for city commutes and occasional highway trips while maintaining decent fuel efficiency. Maintenance costs are reasonable too—a practical choice for family cars.
