Why Up is the saddest movie ever?

Up’s opening scene is notoriously sad. Pixar decided to rip your heart out in the first 4 minutes of the movie. But this one little 4 minute scene has taught me so much about storytelling. Pixar considered a redemption arc for the villain, Charles Muntz, in Up, but ultimately decided against it due to the potential for a long, dialogue-heavy scene.
Why was Up so sad?
Carl and Ellie wanted to have kids but couldn’t, which was a big emotional hit for Ellie, but they eventually moved on. Sadly, as Carl got tickets for them to travel to Paradise Falls, Ellie fell sick and passed away, leaving Carl heartbroken and alone. Mel begs Ellie to cut the baby out with a knife before she dies (and the fetus with her), but Ellie is too scared, too traumatized, and too helpless to act quickly. She can only sit and watch, sobbing, as all three of them—Owen, Mel, and their unborn child—succumb to their injuries.From that point on, the filmmakers went with a sorrowful version of the sequence. In one cutting room session, one part of the sequence in which Ellie is despondent having learned she is not able to have children, received many notes from members of the studio, believing the moment may have pushed things too far.Their marriage is a happy and loving one, and they looked forward to starting a family together.
