Lookers was taken over by the Canadian outfit, Global Auto Holdings, in October 0f 2023, and the firm has overseen a period of drastic change in the two years since. As well as major job losses and site closures, 2024 and 2025 have also seen the appointment of a new board of directors, chaired by former VW boss Smith. Global Auto Holdings, which is headed up by Kuldeep Billan, bought Lookers for £504m in late 2023. Lookers CEO Mark Raban subsequently left the company, which went through a round of job cuts.

Lookers was founded in 1908 by John Looker, and was set up initially to sell bicycles, parts, accessories and the occasional used car. Today, the company represents 32 manufacturer brands, selling a huge range of new and used vehicles from 150 dealerships in the UK and Ireland. Lookers and Austin became very closely associated such that the slogan Lookers is Austin lasted for many years. The business continued to prosper until World War II, in 1939.
