The term “Slug Bug” comes from a game that people play, with the word “slug” referring to a punch and the word “bug” referring to the Beetle’s insectoid shape. People play Slug Bug by pointing out Beetles on the road and punching other players. The Volkswagen Beetle is also known affectionately as the Punch Buggy.
