The Royal and Ancient Golf Club founded what is now the Official World Golf Ranking for male professionals in 1986, and the R&A introduced the World Amateur Golf Ranking for male amateurs in 2007. Darbon, 45, has led the Club for seven years having arrived at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens in July 2017, and while he departs to pursue an exciting opportunity as Chief Executive of The R&A (based in St Andrews, Scotland), he will remain on the Northampton Saints board as a Non-Executive Director.Mark Darbon’s appointment as the new chief executive of the R&A comes at a time when men’s professional golf remains embroiled in unprecedented uncertainty. The 45-year-old will leave his job in charge of Premiership title holders Northampton Saints to succeed Martin Slumbers at the St Andrews-based governing body.Mark Darbon has been appointed as the new chief executive of The Royal and Ancient (R&A) UK-based golfing body. He will succeed the long-serving Martin Slumbers who announced in January that he would be stepping down at the end of this year.As of July 2024, he is a non-executive director of England Hockey, Women’s Premiership Rugby and Northampton Saints. During the early part of his professional career, Darbon worked as a strategy director for beverage manufacturing company, Diaegeo and lived in Shanghai, China for almost two years.
