Both the EA111 1. EA888 Gen1 2. R Sciroccos of the earlier model years have a bit of a bad reputation due to issues related to the timing chain and/or chain tensioner. Later model years are a different thing though. There really is a lot going for the Scirocco – well-built interior, practical boot, safe handling and modern engines. However, most of its rivals are a lot newer as models and you can really feel that age gap.More than anything else the Scirocco R is still really good fun. It perhaps lacks the outright excitement of an RCZ R or the pace of a Golf but the Scirocco remains agile, compliant and with fairly good traction despite lacking the new VAQ ‘diff’.Both models use the 2. EA113 motor from the old Mk5 Golf GTi rather than the latest EA888 motor from the current Golf GTi, but the Golf R gets 266bhp and four-wheel drive, while the Scirocco R must ‘make do’ with 261bhp and front-wheel drive.The Volkswagen Scirocco R Line is a brilliant all-rounder in terms of looks, efficiency and performance. It won’t be worth the extra £1,525 outlay for most buyers, but it makes sense if you’re looking for a more desirable package with a sportier appearance and handling edge over the Scirocco GT.
