Is a VW Scirocco a good car?
There really is a lot going for the scirocco – well-built interior, practical boot, safe handling and modern engines. However, most of its rivals are a lot newer as models and you can really feel that age gap. Do VW still make Scirocco?
As previously mentioned, the Volkswagen Scirocco has been dead since 2017. The third generation utilized the same construction as the Golf Mk6, Eos, and SEAT Leon Mk2, which was essentially a sportier-looking alternative to the Golf with a sexy silhouette and a less practical interior. As the company restructures in the wake of its diesel-related naughtiness, less profitable models are being killed off. The Scirocco’s place in the range has been undermined by the success of the latest fast Golfs, which feel a lot more modern. It’s a shame. I liked the Scirocco from the first time I drove it in 2008.Maintaining a Scirocco will cost more than running an equivalent VW Golf, but this isn’t to say it’s expensive. Insurance starts at group 28 for the least powerful petrol, rising to the R in group 34. Expect servicing costs to be on a par with the Golf, though, and there are a number of plans available for newer cars.In its defence, like all Sciroccos, its residual values will look after you; it’s unique among hot hatch rivals in that it’ll retain more than 50 percent of its value over three years/60,000 miles.Scirocco R is the fastest by considerable margin. How fast is a Scirocco?

In a word, no. The Scirocco was 40mm longer, a significant 51mm wider and a massive 97mm lower than the Golf. It had its track widened too for broader, more stable footprint, and by 35mm at the front and 59mm at the back.If you’re fond of threading your way down rat runs, you’ll find the Scirocco most rewarding. That doesn’t come at the expense of ride comfort, though. You’ll find that the all-new Golf’s ride is a little better if you drive the two back-to-back, but the Scirocco is never uncomfortable, even if it’s somewhat firmer.Either way, it was nice and flexible, making it easy to drive, but it wasn’t particularly fast, so it suits those who want the Scirocco for its looks and not its speed. Another 1. PS was also offered and this felt a good bit perkier, so we reckon this is the one that’ll suit most drivers.
Why not to buy a Scirocco?
The Scirocco has been recalled four times. The first was in December 2009 for DSG drive-loss problems. Diesel fuel leaks led to a campaign in December 2011. In March 2017, faulty airbags brought a recall, and the most recent issue was in June 2017; the ABS and ESP could fail on cars built up to May 2010. The Volkswagen Scirocco is a three-door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive, sport compact hatchback manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen in two generations from 1974 to 1992 and a third generation from 2008 until 2018. TSI petrol engine (with 178bhp) or the more powerful of the two 2. TDI diesel (with 181bhp). The most frugal 1. TSI reports a combined figure of 52. At the opposite end of the range, the Scirocco R still stops short of being a prolific fuel-guzzler – official combined economy of up to 35. CO2 of 185g/km should keep running costs relatively low.Volkswagen apparently sold something in the region of seven-million Mk1 Golfs, but how many Mk1 Sciroccos left the factory gates do you reckon? About half a million. So it’s a two-door coupé version of a great car, but much rarer and, don’t forget, coach-built.The Scirocco is available with a choice of four petrol and two diesel engines. These comprise a 1. TSI turbocharged petrol unit producing 125 PS; a 2. TSI turbocharged unit with 180 PS, 220 PS or 280 PS; and a 2. TDI turbodiesel unit with 150 or 184 PS.As the flagship performance coupe, the VW Scirocco R is the most powerful Scirocco ever produced. The Scirocco R gives Volkswagen’s fantastic coupe the performance to match its stunning looks. Under the bonnet, 261bhp has been squeezed from the 2. TSI engine.The GTI Performance, although down on power, is around the same money as the coupe yet its more modern platform gives it an edge dynamically. The Golf R, with 306bhp and four-wheel drive is just over £2000 more than the Scirocco R, but it’s leagues ahead in terms of performance and capability.
