Carl Fredricksen is the protagonist of Disney•Pixar’s 2009 animated feature film Up. He is an old and cranky retired helium balloon salesman of the zoo, and the widower of Ellie Fredricksen. He is voiced by the late Edward Asner, who also reprised the role in Dug Days and Carl’s Date. Up’s opening scene is notoriously sad. Pixar decided to rip your heart out in the first 4 minutes of the movie.
