Is VW 4MOTION AWD or 4WD?
Currently, there are no Volkswagen vehicles that offer 4WD. While 4MOTION® offers some aspects of both 4WD and AWD, it’s technically an all-wheel drive system. Essentially, VW 4MOTION® AWD is an improved version of your average all-wheel drive system. It automatically senses which tires need torque the most and will adjust engine output based on driving conditions.Some systems do this part-time, defaulting to front or rear-wheel drive and engaging all-wheel drive when needed. The Volkswagen AWD system goes beyond that. VW 4MOTION stays on full-time so that it can react in a fraction of a second, which can make all the difference in an emergency situation.Turn On/Turn Off: You do not have to engage the AWD system, as it automatically adjusts the amount of engine power sent to the wheels. WD systems can be turned on or off as needed. If the 4WD system is off, RWD or FWD takes over.Over the years, 4MOTION has been specially tuned by elite engineers so that their default programming is to send 90 percent of engine power to the front axle and 10 percent to the rear wheels for superior handling akin to that of front-wheel drive vehicles. It also allows for sharper handling overall.
